Step 3 - Drop the Piece

Once you move the knight over the target square that you have chosen, then only the target square and the original square remain highlighted. In addition, the mouse pointer now changes appearance to a hand shape which means that a move to this square is allowed.

You can now release the mouse button and the knight will drop to this square - and the move is done.

You do not need to worry about the exact position of the knight when you release the mouse, as a moved piece always moves automatically to the center of the target square.

Capturing an Enemy Piece

You do not need to do anything else even if the target square that you are moving to contains an enemy piece which you want to capture. Just drop your piece on the target square and the enemy piece is captured and automatically removed.

In the diagram, the enemy pawn is about to be captured by the white knight. Once the knight is dropped, the enemy pawn is automatically captured and disappears!

Castling

When castling, you simply drag and drop the king to the target square - the program knows that this is a castling move and automatically moves the rook to complete the move. You do not need to do anything else.

Note that it is not possible to do a castling move by moving the rook first; you can only castle by moving the king.

In the diagram, white is about to drop the king in order to do a castling move. Once the king is dropped, the rook will immediately move to the other side of the king.

Promotion

If you want to promote a pawn, you simply drag and drop the piece as normal. However, once you have dropped the pawn, a popup window appears allowing you to select the piece that you wish to promote the pawn to. You simply click on the piece you would like to get, the popup window disappears and your pawn changes into the selected piece.

For example, in this diagram, white has already dragged and dropped a pawn onto the final rank. A popup window has appeared, allowing white to select the piece that the pawn is to be promoted to. Move the mouse over the required piece, click and release the mouse button, and the pawn will automatically be replaced with the selectd piece.

It is not possible to cancel the move once the promotion popup window has appeared, as the pawn has already been dropped onto the targete square and any captured piece removed. If you close the popup window without selecting a piece, the program automatically promotes your pawn to a queen.
