Besides moving a pawn, you can also capture an enemy piece with a pawn, even if the enemy piece is a lot stronger than your pawn. This is why pawns are so useful!
If there is an enemy piece on a square diagonally in front of one of your pawns, then you can move you pawn to that square and remove the enemy piece from the board - this is normally a good thing, especially if the enemy piece is a valuable piece.
This is why your two pawns which are at the edge of the board, on columns A and H, are not quite as powerful as the others, as they can only capture in one direction, while all the other pawns can capture in two directions, forward-left and forward-right.
