Once you know the basic rules of chess, it is often a very good idea to look at some complete games, where every move is explained in detail. In this way, you will learn the tactics and strategies that are needed to be able to play a great game of chess.

This book, which consists of a series of 33 interesting games, is probably the most well-known chess book ever written. The author, Irving Chernev, explains the thinking behind every single move of all 33 games, and often gives multiple reasons why a particular move is good or bad.

Most of the games in this book are taken from the early twentieth century, and are usually reasonably short games. Often, the author demonstrates how a relatively weak move by one player can be exploited by the other player to win the game.

Overall, this is an excellent book for beginner and intermediate chess players - besides being very instructive, it is very well written and the step-by-step approach of explaining each move allows the strategies used by each player to be easily and clearly understood. Highly recommended!
