A Brief History of Chess

So where did it all start?

Of course, no one really knows for sure where it all began, as it was so long ago. Chess is, in fact, one of the oldest games of skill that is still played today.

Early Days

Some think that the game may have originated in China, though most experts now believe that it probably began in India or Persia (now known as Iran) around 1,400 years ago. In any case, wherever it started, it proved very popular and spread rapidly to other regions and countries...

Arab Conquests

In those days, the Arabs became very powerful and managed to build a vast empire that stretched from India in the east, through all of Northern Africa, and up into Spain. So it was probably through this route that chess first arrived in Europe. It quickly spread to neighbouring France and by medieval times was being played all over Europe. The Vikings, who came from Scandinavia and invaded much of northern Europe, probably helped to spread the game further.

Medieval Times

It was the europeans who gave the chess pieces the names that they have today, which are all of medieval origin.chess board and chess pieces A knight, for example, was a professional soldier on horseback who was often employed to protect the king or nobility, and, needless to say, to sacrifice his life for theirs. The bishop, of course, represents the church, which was extremely powerful and influential in those days. The pawns represent the lowest classes, who would have been called upon to help the king wage his wars, whilst the king himself would have sought refuge and protection in his castle. The queen is the most powerful piece on the chessboard, and this may also have been true in medieval times.

However, in chess as in history, the ultimate fate of the kingdom lies with the king; if the king is toppled and defeated, then the whole kingdom falls with him - and you lose the game!
